Chikankari 1st product to be promoted under ODOP
In pursuance of its ‘one district-one product’ (ODOP) policy, the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) department has identified six cities, the products of which it will focus on in the coming months. Lucknow’s chikankari will be the first product that will be taken up for promotion, followed by Moradabad’s metal craft, Varanasi’s saris, Gorakhpur’s <a class=”key_underline” href=”https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/terracotta" pg=”AS1_InlineMedia#AS1_https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/lucknow/chikankari-1st-product-to-be-promoted-under-odop/articleshow/65697465.cms~terracotta-https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/terracotta">terracotta</a> products, Agra’s leather products and Kanpur’s leather goods. The government has identified products specific to 75 districts in the state which it will promote to revive the industry.
“We will handle one city each month, starting with Lucknow where the department intends holding various events related to ODOP by the third week of September. A preliminary meeting has already been held with experts on promotion of chikan, including exporters, Lucknow Management Association, SEWA, a few designers, NIFT Delhi, UP School of Design, etc, to understand how chikankari can be given a more universal appeal,” said Bhuvnesh Kumar, secretary, MSME. For Lucknow, said Kumar, a buyer-seller meet will be held while manufacturers, exporters and artisans of chikan work will be asked to set up an exhibition at Awadh Shilpgram.
Focus will also be on the <a class=”key_underline” href=”https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/geographical-indication" pg=”AS1_InlineMedia#AS1_https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/lucknow/chikankari-1st-product-to-be-promoted-under-odop/articleshow/65697465.cms~geographical indication-https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/geographical-indication">geographical indication</a> (GI) of products so that they stand out. “Chikan is produced not just in Lucknow but because it is special to Lucknow, it will have a GI tag and people will be able to identify it as Lucknowi chikan.
